Don’t get ‘tyred’ out on the track!

Thursday, 25 June 2015 15:20:00 Europe/London

As specialists of Track Bikes, Helmets and Bike Accessories, we also offer a vast selection of wheels and tyres to help racers achieve optimum racing performance when on the track. Decent tyres are one of the most important elements of a rider’s kit so it is key to ensure that they are fit to ride on. Worn out tyres will not only affect your performance but can also cause injury (or worse) as they won’t grip the track effectively.

Uneven knobs, bad inflation and even the wrong compounds making up the tyre all influence how a bike rides which affects the mechanics such as, working the engine harder than necessary or how the shocks respond to the terrain. It is therefore of paramount importance that riders purchase good quality, well-maintained dirt bike tyres as this could mean the difference between winning and losing a race not to mention protecting their life.

Motocross tyres have a knobby design structure, which vary based on the type of track. Soft loamy dirt, sand and mud require a harder compound rubber tyre composed of taller and wider-spaced knobs that create a paddle effect and keep mud from packing in between the knobs. Whereas firm terrain requires a softer rubber tire that conforms easier to the ground. Knobs are closer together and shorter to prevent flexing which creates a larger contact patch for better grip. In the middle you get intermediate tyres - the most popular selection, as these types of tyres tend to work well in most conditions.

We stock a varied range of Motocross tyres including Blackrock tyres, Goldentyre, Metzeler tyres and Pirelli tyres all of which comply to the sports riding requirements.

The shelf life of dirt bike tires is approximately 4-5 years after the manufacture date however there are a few visual signs that could indicate that you need new tyres. For example, the rubber on your tyres is dry, discolored or cracked! Or the knobs on the tread have become rounded or too short then it's time to invest in new tyres!

Get on track – tips on how to get you started in the world of motocross. Heading to the track for the first time can be an intimidating experience and riding competitively probably seems like a pipe dream. It takes a lot of practice but our tips below should help give you the confidence to make a start and with a lot of practice you could soon be tearing up the dirt and whizzing round corners at adrenalin pumping speeds.

➢ Practice – As the old saying goes, “practice make perfect’ and this can’t be more try when it comes to motocross riding. The more you ride the more you will learn about your bike and how it runs on the track. You need to feel at one with your bike and learn to anticipate what coming up ahead. This can only be achieved by hopping on the saddle and going for it.

➢ Jumps – This is one of the most exhilarating parts about learning to ride as possibly one of the reasons you wanted to get into the sport in the first place. It’s not easy launching a 300lb + bike into the air with you straddling the saddle. It requires upper body strength as well as strong leg muscles to hold the bike between your knees and control to land the bike and speed and continue riding. Once mastered though you’ll be addicted.

➢ Corners - Cornering with finesse requires knowledge of the track and the bike. Mastering a smooth corner starts with the approach, it isn't simply taking a turn at high speed. You’ll need to glide through the bend all while covering the brakes and throttle. Positioning your body in the correct position helps all this and will result in your being up front of the race rather than shoveling dirt.

➢ Whoops – And I’m not referring the word you might use when you drop something. No, in motocross terms ‘whoops’ are small mountains with high peaks and deeper valleys arranged side-by-side within close proximity that you graze your bike across the top of - really fast. They pose the most dangers to riders as if they’re not tackled correctly you’ll more than likely end up dusting dirt off your backside. Upper arm strength and a tight leg grip are vital to avoid you losing control. Whoops can be small, allowing you to just skim across them without too much bother or deep, these pose the biggest challenge to riders.

➢ Rollers – Similar to Whoops but less likely to take you out as they present a more gradual bump with a smaller peak that flatten out a bit. Rollers often follow a corner, which is why the approach and exit of a corner is so important as being overconfident in your cornering could mean you’ll come unstuck when hitting a rollers around the next bend.

➢ Watch the Pros – Get some tips and inspiration from your heros. After all they were once a beginner just like you.

➢ Bike Maintenance – Perhaps the most important part of racing is looking after your bike. A finely tuned bike wins races and prevents costly repairs. So also perform routine maintenance checks on your bike.

➢ Rest & Nutrition - Motocross racing is both mentally and physically exhausting. It is therefore important to eat right, get plenty of rest between races and save your energy for the track. We have an extensive selection of bikes, helmets and accessories right here on our website, so get browsing and enjoy your ride…
